Eaton Socon 3, St Neots Town 1

1st November 2022 :: Hunts Senior Cup

With it being the Halloween period it was a Trick or Treat time. The trick was St Neots making their manager disappear before the team arrived at the St Neots Interiors Stadium and the treat was Eatons performance for the bumper crowd……..

Step 6 against Step 4 meant Eaton were heavy underdogs for this one especially with St Neots naming a strong side contrary to certain reports put out by others 👀. Eaton were far from full strength themselves with Steve Shaw, Billy Roberts and Shane Fox all missing from the squad through injury and suspension.

The first half saw Eaton make a positive start and they took a deserved lead on 7 minutes when the impressive Andre Reece-Brown produced a defence splitting pass for Rhys Thorpe to break the offside trap, race through and round the keeper before stroking the ball home into the empty net. 1-0.

Eaton were on top and chances came and went for Dom Mason and Scott Joseph before St Neots had a header cleared off the line by Ben Hickling and his full head of hair. St Neots were seeing more of the ball without testing Eaton but a defensive lapse saw Trev Charles fire home for the equaliser on 38 minutes. A blow for the eagles just before half time but a very positive 45 minutes none the less.

The second half saw Eatons togetherness, desire and ability shine through and it was no surprise when Tom Baxter’s clever pass found Mason who in turn fed Thorpe to fire home from just inside the area to give Eaton Socon the lead on 49 minutes with a thunderous effort for his second of the game. 2-1

The Eagles weren’t finished there and went in search of a third with Thorpe twice denied at one end before the superb Ev Jeckells saved well from Tom Charles. On 63 minutes though Eaton did have their third when a corner fell to JAKE ALDERSON who fired home into the roof of the net give the home side a two goal advantage which was no more than they deserved.

Eaton then defended resolutely with Tom Roberts and late call up from the reserves Josh Kane defending brilliantly with Hickling and Dixon either side of them. The home side controlled the rest of the game extremely well against the higher league opposition who couldn’t find a way back although on the away team bench the bloke on the laptop completed solitaire twice over so fair play to him for his commitment on that.

3-1 at full time and an absolutely brilliant display from little old Eaton Socon, the lowest ranked side in the competition who progressed through to the semi-finals 🦅

Our Sponsors, St Neots Interiors MOM pick on the night was Rhys Thorpe who produced a brilliant display upfront scoring twice and was a constant threat throughout 👏🏻
