Lakenheath 3, Eaton Socon 3

17th September 2016 :: Cambs FA County League Kershaw Premier

Well where do we start.. those that witnessed the game at The Pit will first of all wonder how Eaton got anything from the game, and then when they thought about it probably wondered how Eaton didnt win. It was that kind of game. Eaton though can thank the two subs that made a difference and goalkeeper and skipper Andrew Wale for a point that keeps Eaton four points clear at the top of the Cambs Kershaw Premier. Eaton to be fair had the worse first half of football they have had in the best part of a year. They went behind on 7 minutes when awful defending saw Standley pick the ball up 25 yards out and drove a rasping shot past Wale. Eaton were disorganised and were giving themselves all kinds of problems with poor decision making.. and on 20 minutes they went further behind when Dean got in behind an incredibly square defence to slot past Wale. Minutes later it could have been worse when Wale fouled Dean and the referee pointed to the spot. Wale however atoned for the foul with a quality penalty save. However Eaton continued to be poor and Lakenheath had chance after chance but somehow only managed to go in with a 2-0 lead.

Eaton made a change at half time bringing on Shane Fox who had an immediate effect. Fox brought Lee Bassett into the game and Eaton started to get a foothold. And finally on 57 minutes Eaton got the breakthrough when Micky Banbury drove through the Lakenheath midfield and passed to Fox whose shot deflected off the keeper and into the net. Eaton though again became sloppy and Lakenheath though Dean and Turner could have and should have put Eaton out of sight.. but thanks to Wale and his makeshift defence managed to keep them out. On 73 minutes the game changed again when out of nothing Eaton reduced the deficeit when Andy Clare picked the ball up on the right and drove a Jordan Henderson like effort into the top corner. Eaton were finally at the races and spent the next ten minutes battering the Lakenheath goal with great chances falling to Fox, Wilks and Spavins but none of them could find the finishing touch. And when Bassett had his shot saved by Issacsson it looked as if their luck was not going to happen. However Clare produced a great run on the right and great cross which found the superb Fox who volleyed home, cue great scenes.

Eaton could then have gone on and won the game but a great ball from the influential Kay found Bassett whose cross flashed across the goal.. there was more drama when Lakenheath's Fincham was sent off for headbutting Fox, but Eaton ran out of time and somehow grabbed a point from the jaws of defeat, but came away happy after maintaining their lead at the top.
