Melbourn FC 1, Eaton Socon A 4
10th December 2016 :: Cambs FA County League MPG 3A
Eaton Socon A team were travelling to high flying Melbourne today in a game were the odds were stacked against the A Team on recent form. The Eaton Socon management had altered their game plan and play system this week in a bid to stop the rot and from the first whistle Eaton Socon were pressing high and putting the Melbourn back four under pressure. This proved to be the tale of the first half with Eaton Socon dominating proceedings. After 15 minutes Charlie Gough was on the score sheet again when a long free kick was misjudged by the Melbourn keeper who was kicking thin air and it bounced into the net. 0-1 Eaton Socon. A great start. Eaton Socon, then using the width and pace provided on the right flank by Asa Johnson were causing no end of problems and this paid off as he raced in behind the back line and put a deadly low cross into the 6 yard box, this was inadvertently put into his own net by a Melbourn man. 0-2 Eaton Socon. Eaton stepped off the gas a touch and Melbourne immediately hit back with a soft set piece goal. 1-2. Elliot Canham in the Eaton Socon sticks was called into action from a free kick and he dived to his left and palmed it wide of the goal acrobatically, he then had to sweep up some corners as Melbourne proved to be difficult on the set pieces but Eaton Socon held firm this time. Jake Dexter who was heading up the front line today, with Sam Ward, was next on the score sheet as an excellent team goal using pace, movement and precision passing from Ward up front and the midfield dynamic duo of Lea Wood and Josh Draper was passed into an almost empty net after splitting the defence open by Dexter's sweet feet. 3-1 half time.
After an excellent first half Eaton Socon stepped off the gas in the second period and allowed Melbourn to advance but soaked up the pressure brilliantly and pounced on the counter using the footballing experience of half pint Lea Wood in the midfield. James Taylor was substituted shortly after following a terrible, cynical foul from the Melbourne man who scraped his studs down his calf and Achilles heel. Sam Drew replaced him in the middle of the park and slotted in expertly. The shape of Eaton Socon was benefitting the play and Socon soon created more chances as Gough was ball playing from the back and Jonjo Smith was picking out Asa who was now upfront after Dexter was replaced by Hayden O Connor, after running legs into the ground. Asa Johnson soon used his other fine asset of the game and turned creator with a pin point ball through to Sam Ward who finished the game off for a Eaton Socon. 1-4. Melbourn tried to put more pressure on the back line of Eaton Socon in the last 10 minutes and had ample set piece chances but their shooting was way off and our centre halves cleared up everything. Asa was stupidly booked late on for kicking the ball away in frustration after another poor tackle from Melbourn.
An excellent day at the office for Eaton Socon who had dominated the league high flyers on their home turf. Man of the match today for Manager Simon was Charlie Gough for his efforts.
Final score Melbourn 1 Eaton Socon 4.
