Eaton Socon 2, Wisbech St Mary 1

15th July 2017 :: Friendly Matches

Luke Swain produced a midfield masterclass as he scored Eaton's equaliser in a good 2-1 win against Wisbech SM. In a very tight affair both teams played some good football but clear cut chances were of a premium in the first half. The front three of Bassett, Fox and Thorpe were quick and sharp but didn't really have any clear cut efforts. The first chance fell to WSM but the forwards shot went wide of Milky Wale's goal. Thorpe and Bassett linked up but Bassett's cross was too long. Then disaster struck when Shane Fox limped of with a thigh injury, an injury that hopefully won't keep the striker out for too long.

Just when it looked as if the first half would end level the impressive Eaton defence fell asleep and WSM scored following a good move. A few changes at half time and it seemed to pay dividends when on 52 minutes good work from Griffiths who found Stockwell... he found Swain who was lurking at the edge of the area and his shot looped over the keeper to make it 1-1. Eaton then took control for the next ten minutes and with Keech and Dale looking solid the dangerous WSM team where being kept at bay. Eaton then won a free kick on 63 minutes and a good ball in from Dawson caused all sorts of problems in the WSM defence and a defender got his head to the ball first but only managed to divert the ball into his own net. WSM then pressed hard for the equaliser but twice were denied by superb saves from Wale. The first being a strong one handed save at his near post and the second a save with his legs when the striker shot from five yards.

A good first outing against a good step 6 side and with Godmanchester coming to the Mick George on Tuesday the team will go forward into the game with lots of confidence...
