Stanground Sports Youth 5, Eaton Socon A 5

30th November 2019 :: Hunts Lower Junior Cup

(4-3 penalties)

After an 8-2 loss to league leaders last week Eatons A team came out blazing with a 12 man squad, and went to 1 - 0 up in the first 15 minutes against Stanground in the hunts Cup. Some nice play down the left between dexter and wardy led to a cross to find the youngster Tom Nash at the far stick. Initially given as off side, the ref realised the linesman needed thicker glasses and deemed it a goal.

Eaton were far the better side but a crazy 15 minutes saw them trailing 4-1. The first goal came from a corner, which seemed to happen in slow motion for the Eaton players as they watch the striker wait for the ball to drop take a touch and fire it into the goal. Then two long balls over the top caught the back four out and we're dispatched nicely by the opposition. The fourth goal was a very dubious penalty decision that was about 2 yards out of the box. Everyone seemed to realise it apart from the ref.

Eaton kept playing and managed to make it 4-2 just before half time with a long range effort form dexter that hit the bar and then the goal line and came out, to be put away by Sam drew, only for VAR to come out and the lino said it crossed the fine from the first shot. (unlucky Sam) hal time and Eaton realised if they kept going the way they were they could get something out of the game and the comeback was on.

10 minutes into the second half wardy is put through the middle and chips the keeper nicely 4-3. With 35 minutes left hus was introduced into the middle for some fresh legs, and it paid off when Eaton had a corner and the ball fell to him at the back post and he sliced it back across the box, only for it to get cleared straight back to him and then smashed it into the goal 4-4.

Eaton kept the pressure on and with 5 minutes to got Eaton got another corner which was cleared and fell to Nash to smash into the goal. 4-5, scenes! Two minutes to go and it was all hands on deck, and in the final 20 seconds Eaton conceded a corner that gets bundled in with some assistance with an arm, unfortunately this to was missed by the ref. 5-5 and on to penalties.

Unfortunately this was where the dream comeback ended for Eaton and lost 4-3 on penalties. Man of the match went to the veteran stand in left back micky (the moustache) Banbury.

Well done to all involved, was a great game and showed some great team spirit.
