Cambridge University Press Res. 2, Eaton Socon res. 0

25th January 2020 :: Kershaw Senior B

For the third week in a row Eaton played a reserve side whose 1st team didn’t have a game. When two of the CUP players pulled up in the warm up, they still managed to field 5 substitutes.

Eaton started well though, in a another must win game. But it wasn’t to be as CUP twice hit Eaton on the break. The CUP centre forward twice outpacing the Eaton back four, before dispatching past White, when it was Eaton on the attack.

In the 2nd half Eaton improved, but chances were few and far between for both sides. A Tom Hall corner, driven to the front post struck a CUP player’s arm which was down by his side. The referee gave a penalty( not the only decision he got wrong on the day.)

Top scorer Heaps stepped up and rattled the post. Much to the joy of the 5 strong CUP management team, and 7 players on the bench, which outweighed the watching crowd of 9.

Lee Griffiths had a chance for a late consolation, but saw his effort well saved by the CUP keeper. This condemned Eaton to a 2nd defeat in consecutive weeks. Fair result on reflection.

Newmarket obviously suffered as a result of Wisbech 1st team being called off as well so no harm done to the title challenge.
