Eaton Socon 1, Eynesbury United 1

5th September 2020 :: Cambs FA County League Kershaw Premier

Eaton started the season with a tough away day at local rivals Eynesbury United and came away with a point and a very positive performance.

A fairly one sided first half saw Eaton boss the game and Eynesbury had their goalkeeper Evan Jeckell to thank for keeping the score at 0-0. Rhys Thorpe was denied by a finger tip save and also had an effort ruled out for offside before Craig Smith couldn’t quite get on the end of a Jake Alderson cross late in the half.

The second half was scrappy and Eynesbury made Eaton pay for not taking their chances when a Sam Piesse cross found Lee Bassett at the far post who controlled and finished to give the home side the lead. Eaton continued to play and look for an equaliser and Thorpe was denied again by Jeckell before seeing his penalty appeal turned down. It looked like being one of those days for Eaton when Jemale McKenzie’s bullet header from a corner was cleared off the line, but a local derby wouldn’t feel right without late drama and that’s exactly what we got. With a minute to go Thorpe flicked on for McKenzie to control and finish superbly into the far corner to earn Eaton a deserved point.

A very encouraging performance for Eaton who face another tough challenge next week when they host Cherry Hinton at River Road.
