Eaton Socon 4, Isleham United 1

4th September 2021 :: Cambs FA County League Kershaw Premier

Eaton returned to winning ways with an impressive team performance that saw them overcome a good Isleham side.

The first half saw Eaton on top and were unlucky not to lead after Jake Alderson raced through and beat the keeper to the ball only to be fouled just outside the box. Rhys Thorpe fired the resulting free kick against the cross bar before the ball bounced away to safety. They did take the lead on the half hour mark though when a ball into the box was nodded down by Mitham for Thorpe to control and finish expertly into the far corner, 1-0 and it stayed that way for the remainder of the half.

The second half started with Eaton looking to kill the game but it was Dom Mason who nearly got killed when the Isleham player tried to snap the Eaton midfielder in half. Straight red card and after some magic spray, an idiot Isleham fan giving some awful banter, Mason returned to the pitch.
A 10 minute scrappy spell followed , but Eaton did extend their lead on 60 minutes when marksman Thorpe fired home his second of the game and 10th of the season with an unstoppable effort from the edge of the area, 2-0. Three points incoming and no doubt the 7 day approach from Eynesbury Rovers because they definitely haven’t been in contact with him already.

Eaton made the extra man count late on and the third came after great play by Alderson on the right wing found Mason arriving in the box to fire home. 3-0 soon became 4-0 when the returning Adam Boothby this time found Thorpe in the box who laid the ball off for Mason to drill home his second of the game!
Game over? Not quite, Isleham managed a consolation when Eaton Keeper Shay Griffiths was spotted with his slippers on, cigar lit and brandy in hand, chilling on his sun lounger, when the Isleham player lofted the ball home from 40 yards out! Decent effort. 4-1 and that’s how it finished.
A very good team performance from Eaton with impressive displays from Roberts, Hickling, Taylor, Mason, and Alderson but it was that man again Rhys Thorpe who was named MOM.

Skipper Thorpe had a few words to say after the game regarding his form and speculation surrounding his future:
‘My form is down to this incredible group of lads we have here who create the chances for me to finish. Speculation is part of football and its always flattering to be linked with other clubs but I am captain of Eaton Socon FC and in the words of Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street’ - I’M NOT F**KING LEAVING!!!!’
