Langford FC 1, Eaton Socon 1

6th August 2022 :: Spartan South Midlands Division One

Eaton made their first appearance at this level of football and certainly didn’t look out of place putting in an encouraging performance.

Eaton settled well and were by far the better side in the opening 25 minutes and should have been ahead with Irvine, Whittingham and Nash all having opportunities to open the scoring but all failing to hit the target letting the home side off the hook. Langford then grew into the game as the half went on and enjoyed a spell of possession without causing any real problem for the Eaton defence which stood firm as we went in at half time level at 0-0.

The second half saw Eaton start brightly again and within 5 minutes of the restart Mason found Whittingham with a fine through ball and he burst through on goal, did everything right up until the finish which saw him blaze over the bar. The sucker punch came soon after when Langford took the lead with their forward latching onto a through ball and slotting past Griffiths who had hardly had anything to do all afternoon. Appeals for offside were waived away and Eaton needed to show the character that has served them well in recent seasons to get back into the game.

Taylor, Parratt and Kane all came on for Eaton to freshen things up as we went in search of an equaliser in the hot conditions.Taylor and Kane were lively in midfield but it was the introduction of the evergreen Parratt that proved decisive. With 15 minutes to play Parratt picked up a loose ball on the right wing, looked up and delivered a brilliant cross into the box which was headed home expertly by skipper Dom Mason to make it 1-1.

A couple of half chances came and went in the remaining minutes but in the end Eaton had to settle for a draw which was the least they deserved on the day. Some very good performances with the back four of Flack, Woodend, Shaw and Dixon all performing well but MOM this week went to Stevie Shaw. The centre back who joined the club in the summer was immense throughout defensively and added an attacking threat with his bursts out from the back.

Next week Eaton entertain Winslow United at the St Neots Interiors Stadium,3pm KO in our first home league game of the season and it would be great to see you all there 🦅
